How to respond diplomatically when a teacher insists your child 'just needs stricter discipline'

A common painful experience for parents is hearing well-meaning educators confuse neurodivergent sensory dysregulation with deliberate behavioral defiance.

Here is the diplomatic script we crafted that successfully shifted our school's perspective without putting the teacher on the defensive:

"We completely appreciate how important classroom order is for everyone. In our child's case, clinical assessments show their nervous system goes into fight-or-flight when auditory noise exceeds certain decibels. When they cover their ears or crawl under a desk, they aren't choosing defiance; they are actively overwhelmed. Let us work together on a sensory break pass so they can reset before stress peaks."

Framing accommodations as helping the teacher manage the room collaboratively yielded much better cooperation than quoting legal rights immediately.
